The Calvert County Democratic Women’s Club met on Tuesday night, June 6th, for their regular monthly meeting. This month the Club presented three of its four scholarships to deserving seniors, one from each Calvert High School. 2017 Scholarship recipients Kelsey Duprey, Patuxent High School, Fiona Dolan Northern HS, and Emma Dodsworth Calvert HS, were presented with their $1,000 checks. Kelsey will be attending Stevenson University to study nursing and biology and plans to become a midwife. Fiona will be starting at the University of MD, College Park to study computer programming. Emma will attend Washington College to study environmental science and biology. All the attendants were pleased to meet these accomplished young woman who were chosen by the Scholarship committee.
The Club was glad to have two speakers from the Calvert County NAACP, Mr. Michael Kent and Mr. Malcolm Funn. Mr. Kent spoke about the history of Calvert County African American education, while Mr. Funn shared some knowledge of segregation and the local African American experience. Both gentlemen were insightful and provided the audience with new and interesting perspectives.
Food donations brought to the meeting amounted to 123 pounds. That tops the donation from last month by more than 17 pounds.
